Promoting Community Involvement in the Arts

FIRST RENT PARTY of the New Year| 7:30p, Friday Jan. 8
At the Pomerene Center for the Arts
Our luck! Sam Schmitt, home from his first semester studying saxophone with David Bixler at Bowling Green University, is champing at the bit to play (even show off a little which is forgivable when you consider his vast new exposure to music). Sam will be playing with HIFI Rendezvous (formerly Whitewoman Jazz before they became politically correct).
In case you're interested here's a list of musicians (with a few online video links) Sam is currently passionate about.
Christian McBride
Joshua Redman playing Jazz Crime
Sonny Stitt
John Coltrane and Stan Getz playing Hackensack
Sonny Rollins
Miles Davis
Bill Evans playing My Foolish Heart
Stochelo Rosenberg playing For Sephora
WHAT IS A RENT PARTY?
At the time of the Great Migration north, blacks emigrating from the south settled the problem of Harlem’s inflated rents by throwing parties. Furniture was moved to the outside walls, musicians and refreshments were brought in, card tables were setup out of the way of the dance floor, and the doors were opened in exchange for a few bucks.
In an effort to relieve stress on our monthly budget, the Pomerene Center has adopted/adapted the Rent Party to help meet our monthly gas bill. YES! We open our doors at 7:30p on First (with some exceptions) Friday evenings, October-April and present great acoustic music– great times (especially if you bring your friends!) –and great food $3 per plate. We'll have coffee but feel free to bring your own beverage. Suggested donation $5 at the door.
