How do we know when a painting or a drawing "works"?

Composition may not entirely explain the beauty of a piece of art but it is one of the most important components of a painting or drawing and is the key to its success.

In this class students will be introduced to the basic ideas of composition in the visual arts, such as balance, symmetry, repetition and use of line. Concepts of placement of objects on the picture plane, the relationship of these objects to each other, and how both of these components contribute to the expressive content of the image will also be practiced.

This beginner class will include simple homework assignments and helpful critiques.
