2pm, Saturday May 9 | Shawn "Thunder" Wallace–Saxophone, Flute & Clarinet with students Alex Jewel–Bass, John Ferrell–Guitar & Drums, Lucas Holmes–Piano

The Ohio State University Jazz Combo led by Professor Shawn Wallace and his students, will provide an opportunity for Coshocton area high school students to learn more about jazz and strengthen their jazz performance skills 2pm, Saturday, May 9 at the Pomerene Center for the Arts.

The masterclass will address issues of jazz performance through the following topics: what & how to practice & rehearse; bad habits to avoid; achieving good ensemble blend & balance; tips for improvisation; goals to strive for in performance, etc. Much verbal and musical exchange will be expected between the high school students and the university personnel.

Student ensembles from each high school will be asked to perform a short selection. Each performance will be followed by a constructive and prescriptive critique. Additionally, The OSU Jazz Combo will model and perform for the students, explaining why they do what they do. Ample time will be provided for Q & A.

Professor Shawn Wallace plays jazz saxophone, clarinet and flute. He is joined by 4 jazz studies majors on the piano, bass, drums and guitar.

Following the masterclass, The OSU Jazz Combo will perform a concert to a public audience beginning at 4:30pm. High School students, faculty and family members are invited to attend.
